For the record, I loved the OVA enough to give it an "8". This one I thought was meh. Disappointment but when I look at both studios, I'm not surprised.

First episode I remember was dull up until the last moment of the episode.
Then it got slightly interesting. The animation was still smooth flowing (didn't necessarily have that feel since it felt slow moving) but the art got significantly worse, but I knew it would be worse just looking at the more simplistic design vs the OVA.
Still enjoyed Birdy's personality. Unfortunately, the further you go, the more it goes into the standard typical teenager cheesy annoying romance that is plaguing the medium.

I'm halfway through and having similar feelings on it. Tsutomu was far more likable in the OVAs, and the pace was far better too.

Once you get to episode 2 of season 2, the tone dramatically shifts.

Tetsuwan Birdy sacrificing art style for animation. Not a problem since they really went all out with smoothness as they were fighting on a grander scaled stage.

Really disappointed by Decode, especially since I liked the OVAs a lot. Birdy might be the only character I liked. Tsutomu was awful, his relationship with Nakasugi was hard to care about when it costs the lives of thousands and nearly the entire world. Then they just reset everything in the end anyway by having her forget the events of the entire show. Don't think I'll ever end up checking out season 2.

Show seriously made me upset watching it. If it hadn't of been for the sake of the nomination thread I might not have bothered finishing it.

Then they just reset everything in the end anyway by having her forget the events of the entire show. Don't think I'll ever end up checking out season 2. I agree with you on all ends. They conveniently have Tsutomu's body ready only for him to suck the Ryunka into his body through a ridiculous kiss to then get it wrecked by Birdy. This show looks like it tries too hard to cater and falls flat. While I don't think the second season is magical, I certainly think it's at least "6.5" territory (I was hesitant on giving it a 7 but I feel it's more of a 7 than a 6 and this is someone with an average mean score of 5.39 currently). The plot is more focused. The action is better. The story overall takes a much darker tone, which should be given the premise. Most of the excess shit that makes the show sort of a bother to watch is not present in the second season. Birdy's backstory is explored more, since Birdy's childhood friend is introduced. Tsutomu is less irritating. Nakasugi hardly has a presence in the second season. You can get into the emotions more, especially Birdy's friend. The comedy between the old hag and the Reaper is a nice touch that wasn't present in the first season. In short, more effort seems to be taken to not to try to imitate the first season. (Also surprised that you gave a rare 5).
