I haven't bought many video games recently and only get the one that I can enjoy the longest with a reasonable price, and oh boy what a pickup. The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies -- only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster. The game is beautiful, challenging, and constantly updating, which a huge update was right around Steam discount promotion as well. So far I have been playing on Pilgrim mode (the easiest) to see how the game works and if I can last as long as a month in there. I now also stream my gameplay occasionally here: vaughnlive.tv/banninghamma

I managed to last 41 days, stockpiling quite a lot of food and tools, only to slip and fall to death trying to cross a ravine. That was only the easiest mode as well.

Tried Stalker mode thrice. Couldn't last more than 4 days, mostly due to wolves.
Energy is drained much more than Pilgrim mode as well that you pretty much have drink and eat enough so you can just sleep through the night.

Managed to beat jam's record surviving at Delolation Point on Stalker mode, killed one wolf in the process as well before two more wolves jumped on and killed me.

Managed to move from Mystery Lake to Pleasant Valley. Also got my first bear kill! Though I got lost on the way back to the shelter and trapped in a blizzard during the night where I just squeezed inside open barn staying away from the wind chill and was very close to be frozen to ded. The stim saved my butt at the last moment and now I can enjoy bear meat!

The latest hotfix was quite messy for those who lives and dies by a bow and arrows. Fortunately, it gets fixed really quickly. Hinterland staffs

You can pretty much punching out wolves and win, but it will cost you clothing if you don't strip naked before the fight. Bears though....

The newest update features a charcoal-drawn map and rock throwing ability so you can get some rabbit meats without man-made tools.

Finally beat the Old Bear of The Hunted, Part 1. 3 days in-game to complete. Basically, you should better run fast, and drink A LOT of coffee along the way. The bear is not really the problem but wolves are since there is no other killing weapons but fighting hand-to-paw combats, which is always risky as fudge. Flares and flare guns are alright but there are many times that wolves run away the same way you have to go.

Tried Interloper mode a bunch of times. Yeah, it is really hard. The latest try ended up at 9 days. Just ran out of food which led to have to scavenge quickly away from the compound, which led to get chased by a wolve, which led to starvation, which led to a bear in front of a house, and that's it.

Finally complete Nomad Challenge. It took me 61 days in-game. It could be faster if I didn't do things irrelevant to the mission i.e. crafting a bow, arrows and a wolfskin coat. The plan was to complete spots on dead-end areas (Timberwolf Mountain, Desolation Point) first, so I did go to TM, then came back to clear spots on Pleasant Valley, only to realize that I missed one spot (Skitter's Ridge basement) after I had already moved on to Coastal Highway. So I had to finish that spot the last, which is not that smooth because of the distance and some blizzards along the way. You pretty much have to hoard a lot of stuffs around since I tried to play it as safe as possible thus thick and heavy clothes and a rifle. It did pay off. 2 bears were killed, one at TM from one long-ranged rifle shot . Another was at Pleasant Valley Farmstead where the bear was patrolling around the house. I took advantage of a bear blindspot where it cannot get in and it took 3 rifle shots to take it down. A lot of wolves were killed and one deer was via baiting it into a wolf.

Completed another The Long Dark challenge last night. The Hunted: Part 2. All I had to do is having good aims, getting warm and few good sleeps along the way, and getting lucky not to face wolves often. Finished it before dusk, 7 hours.

First try at climbing Timberwolf Mountain. Good thing I did on Pilgrim mode because along the way there were 3 bears and many wolves to go through.

Also finished Whiteout challenge today, 14 days to do so.
I notice for other Let's Play videos that the newest version has upped the challenge's difficulty by adding food needed to be collected from 15kg to 25kg.
After finding a rifle, which is not that easy to find in Coastal Highway since it could show up in one of many fishing huts spread throughout the coast, the next difficult part is that there is not enough oil around CH. So, I decided to fish the heck out to gather oil that way while adding cooked fish into the food stock as well.
Since the main shelter is the garage, which is always infected by wolves, I ended up fighting at least 5 wolves with different results.
I also got lucky that there were not many blizzard during the challenge.

Playing my 2nd attempt. 12 days survived so far and only 1 wolf attack that I managed to fend off using a knife. I'm always over equipment load so that hinders my exploration. Scavenging is what's keeping me alive in terms of food, but luckily I found a rifle in an abandoned car.

The weight wise, if you haven't settled at one place yet, being under 40kg (don't know in lb) is fine when you are still moving around hoarding stuff.

Normal. Died after 2 bear attacks and 3 wolf attacks. :/ Even you are prepared, try not to get close to them. Until you learn how to effectively kill them, avoid. First bear encounter was unavoidable. I walk out of a hanger, make a turn and a bear appears behind a boat. My torch decided to be ineffective on the next wolf encounter. After that, there's a bridge I need to cross and a bear is blocking the way. Me thinking a head shot from my rifle will do, I shoot it, but proceeded to get mauled. I rest up for a couple of hours, but still weary. I decide to rest again. A wolf finishes me off in my sleep. All that happened in a span of 20 minutes XD

Torches and flares are not guaranteed animal repellents as well. Only lighting a campfire works, tedious but always working. The better ways to shoot a bear is that you do it either where bears can't reach (house patio, on the top of a fallen tree, inside a fishing hut, etc) or where you can quickly get in to escape (a door, a car, etc) I did the former and managed to kill a bear with one arrow shot

Finally pushed Interloper play to 20+ days.
Get fire. Get to the forge. Get a knife. Get food and clothes along the way. Get a bow and arrows.
It is still very hard to get those.
