It's already March. This is off to a great start. Here is a list of films I am looking forward to for the upcoming year. A lot of them have already been released in 2017 in festivals but count as 2018 films. It's no big deal. At first I thought 2018 was kind of shaping up to be weak but it's actually not too bad. There is always like 3 movies a year that I consider all time good and I'm not sure what those could be this year but there are a lot of contenders. So many nice premises and trailers. left to right

Week 1 - 03/11/2018 - 03/17/2018 I decided to do a personal classic to start it off. I haven't seen this film in a long time but I credit as the film that got me to love Korean films. The first Korean film I remember watching is Old Boy which shouldn't come as a surprise because it's generally considered the landmark film of its industry. Old Boy is very weird and offputting if you are not prepared for it but I Saw the Devil is a lot more accessible to an English speaking audience. It's pretty straight forward and follows two characters on opposite sides of the law. What is interesting, however, is that the villain of this film is a lot more fleshed out and acts as the protagonist of the film whereas his counterpart is a more mysterious and his moral and ethical compass questioned throughout. The performance from the villain is borderline iconic and I put him up there with any movie villain. The violence in this film is intense. It does not really give a shit and this is what I like about Korean films. There is a particular scene involving a taxi that took me by complete surprise and quite honestly is the reason I decided to watch this again and again. It's beautifully shot and chaotic. s/o to the director too because he also did A Bittersweet Life. I consider that one of the best action films ever. 9/10

Week 2 - 03/18/2018 - 03/24/2018
Forgotten - 2017 horror/thriller
Another Korean film but this time it was completely unintentional. I had this film on hold for a little while and while looking through my stuff, I chose this on off the strength of its name alone. Turns out I made the right choice. This is the type of film I believe is best left alone in terms of trying to describe its plot or characters. I won't get into that because I feel anyone reading this should just flat out watch this film. 8/10

The reason I held out from saying anything about this film is because I remembered the premise before going in and if you know that much, it will dampen the film for you. I was able to see where the story was headed immediately as well as even pointing out stuff that would happen scene by scene. Now that may because because I watch too much shit but I think it's also because this film telegraphs itself and is pretty by the books.

Anyhow, what a freaking movie! Didn't expect anything like this at all. {Spoiler} Just to start off, I think Netflix was trolling me, because I watched half the movie, before I took a break. When I restarted it, the scene continued right at the fucking jump scare of the girl screaming in the dream sequence. Fuck you Netflix! I experienced a mini heart attack.
This is one twisted ass psychological horror, every time I thought I had the movie figured out, the movie found itself a new route I didn't expect.
Never thought the family itself were detectives, that it was all an elaborate scheme to kick start his memory, the doctor ordered him to do it in exchange to save his family and the doctor to cash in on his insurance claim. Then at the end, the guy not telling the grown up boy the truth...
Such a dark twisted ending. ^Not really a review, more like a major spoiler, maybe I'll write a proper one later once I digested this movie. But hot damn! This movie was a sadistic rollercoaster for the mind. 9.5/10

Group. Killing Ground. 2017. Thriller. A couple's camping trip turns into a frightening ordeal when they stumble across the scene of a horrific crime. This movie had some potential, but didn't really get too far off the beaten path. This is the kind of movie that has been done before (Eden Lake), and felt pretty formulaic. I thought the acting was nice and the character development was good, but that can only take you so far with a story that doesn't deliver fully on its long build up. 5.5/10

Boogie. It Comes At Night. 2017. Mystery/Horror. It was my second attempt at watching this movie. First go-around, I tried to watch it with my cousin. We were more focused on our own conversations, so we turned it off. Second go, I was more determined to pay attention. This film felt like it was based off a short story from a literature class. Lots of open ended scenes, imagery, and an ending leaving us, the viewers, to decided what really happened. The pace was super slow to build up the suspense, but it lead me to start daydreaming a lot and I had to fight my attention back. The dream sequences were the strongest aspect of the film; truly horrific and blended with reality nicely, which I felt gave a clue on how the ending came to be. An above average movie, but I would only recommend it to hardcore horror fans and not to any average job. 7/10 (Edited)

Yeah, I lost interest after it came out that the trailers were very different from the film. I don't care for symbolism or dream sequences. I want that shit to happen. idk that's me

Yeah, I lost interest after it came out that the trailers were very different from the film. I don't care for symbolism or dream sequences. I want that shit to happen. idk that's me Yeah, but get this: {Spoiler} The last dream before Travis finds lil Andrew on the floor and the red door is wide open, Travis dreams about opening the red door and finding his dog Stanley battling some kind of creature out of view.
This scene is set up with all the dream sequences that make you question what could be reality or a dream. I think that last dream was actual reality and Travis is what brought the sickness back to the house.
Also, there is a scene where the father tells Travis to only trust family. This ends up being everybody's undoing, because the father took the word of Travis' lie of not opening the door, instead of the truth about Andrew saying, 'He doesn't know" if he opened the door or not. Life has a funny way of turning our strengths into weaknesses. The father's ironclad belief in his family is what tore his family a part.
Everybody ends up damned at the end like a Shakespearean play. You just got to pay attention to the details.

It sounds like 6 is a low score cuz that sounds interesting plus the movie looked good from the trailers. What about it put you off? How slow and boring it is? Not that slow is inherently bad but this film has a whole lot of nothing?

You guys are right. 6 is pretty low, but I didn't enjoy the movie as soon until afterwards when I thought about it some more and read about it online. I'll bump it up to a 7, and not higher because it didn't capture me on the first go (or even the second go).
For example, The Killing of the Sacred Beast was longer and had a slower pace, but the movie gripped me from start to finish. This movie didn't.

Veronica - 2018 - supernatural. This was a Boogie rec. I didn't even know about it at all tbh. I am not into possession or supernatural movies and this film is pretty much like all the others in many ways but what separates it from most is that it's well made. The soundtrack is really, really good. I'm talking download the soundtrack good so I would definitely say that is one of the strongest aspects of the film. Lot of punk and electronic shit mixed with some orchestral stuff that you don't really hear anymore in horror films. Another cool thing is the design of the monster/ghost/demon or whatever you want to call the crap that plays antagonist in these films. It just looked cool and not like a corny ghost/demon. It was just a shadow thing. Just really nice visually. Speaking of visuals, this film has some nicely edited scenes that kinda stuck with me like there is a scene where the protagonist is walking on the ground that turn into a book she was reading in a weird mix of montage and real time stuff. It was cool. Something you would see in a commercial. So yeah, if you noticed, I've been praising how the film was made and not really the film itself. That's because I don't really really care for the film as a whole. Not that I hated it but I certainly don't like it as much as I should purely from now nicely made it is. It just didn't capture me but that is probably due to my almost complete lack of care for the subgenre. I'd give it a 7/10

Watched "A Quiet Place". It was very well done and worth the praise. There are some gripes I have with it, but it doesn't ruin the movie.
Best horror movie so far in 2018 ?
