Week 29: 7/17/17 - 7/23/17

TSK / Boog / Prof: Creepshow. 1982. Anthology. An anthology which tells five terrifying tales based on the E.C. horror comic books of the 1950s. This is the first (of hopefully several) George Romero films I watch this week. Rest in Peace G. For those who never watched as a kid (like me) or don't really know the premise, Creepshow is written by Stephen King which is made abundantly clear. There are comic book transitions / stills between stories which are really cool and make for a cool change of pace.
The first short is called Father's Day. It revolves around a mean old coot Bernie Sanders and the strained relationships of his family members. This one was odd and hard to get into. I liked the deadpan conversational style of it, but it lacked quite a bit of substance. Only gave this one a 5/10.
The next short is called The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verril. Meteor drops from outserspace onto a recluse's lawn. Weird shit happens. The main character in this one was so goofy and fun. Was 10-15 min in length and I quite enjoyed it. 7/10 for this one.
Next up is Something to Tide You Over. This was definitely the best of the five. The story revolves around an old sociopath living out of a beach house and tormenting a young couple. The nonchalant attitude and happy go luckiness of the antagonist was awesome. Some good one liners and a good build to a fun finish. 9/10
Up fourth is The Crate. This was really good. Had a feel of Re-Animator mixed with Heathers mixed with and American Werewolf in London. A university janitor finds a crate tucked underneath a stairwell with a shipping label from Antarctica. This is one of those times where a box is best left unopened. 8/10
Finally, we close it off with They're Creeping Up on You. A rich businessman lives in a pristine penthouse apartment ... only to discover a slight infestation. This guy is funny af. One liner after one liner dealt with no regard for emotional widows (of which he is the cause for). This one was solid and was pretty quick. 7/10.
Overall this is a must watch for fans of the genre and is 8/10.

TSK: Night of the Living Dead. 1968. Zombie / Thriller. There is panic throughout the nation as the dead suddenly come back to life. The film follows a group of characters who barricade themselves in an old farmhouse in an attempt to remain safe from these flesh eating monsters. This movie is fucking awesome. This movie has so much going for it. Classic cabin in the woods feel. Power struggle between a group of strangers. Characters finding out the rules of the monster (conveniently through television and radio broadcasts). Not only does this movie set the standard for zombie movies, it holds up as a phenomenal piece in the genre. The only reason I can't give this movie a 10 is the old timey kill scenes (which at the time are par for the course, but they look hella silly now). I could go on and on about this movie, but I'll leave it at this - go watch it (especially if you've never seen it). 9.5/10

TSK / Moe / Sug: 12 Feet Deep. 2017. Thriller. Inspired by true events, two sisters are trapped under the fiberglass cover of an Olympic sized public pool and must brave the cold and each other to survive the harrowing night. I'd heard about this movie on a podcast an the premise was cool af so I was pretty excited going in. There were a lot of cliche moments in the character building section, but the dialogue between the characters was mostly solid. This movie is fairly similar to Frozen (fun movie worth a watch). The sisters get locked in 15 min into the movie, and the movie is able to stay tense pretty much the whole way which is not an easy task. All in all this was a solid movie that would be a decent watch with a group of friends. 6/10
