Hope Amuro's whiny behavior is over with. 20 episodes into MSG and he's been kinda of annoying. Yeah. I'm not looking forward to going through the UC universe, since once I start, there's no escape. I want to at least watch the independent ones. 0080 War in the Pocket, 08th MS Team, and Thunderbolt

I want to at least watch the independent ones. 0080 War in the Pocket, 08th MS Team, and Thunderbolt I might be overplaying his whinyness a bit. He was sort of unwillingly dragged into the war, and in the time he spends struggling with that he makes several terrible decisions. I think he's past that now where I'm at, certain events lead to him finally growing a pair.
I find myself comparing this to Ideon a lot, as they tell a very similar story. Think I kind of like Ideon a little more so far, there was a lot of mystery around the mech and ship they piloted.

MSG starts getting real good around 20 episodes in. Not that it wasn't enjoyable before that, but once the characters are developed a little more and their roles solidified it does get better.

I like the Macross mechanics of their mechas Also coincidentally, you put the modes together and it's "BFG" I enjoyed the things Macross have that Gundams didn't have (or I haven't seen yet). Seeing the super dimension fortress transform and seeing the city built inside getting destroyed was pretty neat. Also like how you can store the cockpit by detaching it from the mecha and then putting it under an arm of the mecha.

[iframe title="YouTube video player" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/I4aQQBLokNo?wmode=transparent&start=0" allowfullscreen="1" width="560" height="349" frameborder="0"][/iframe] Unfortunately the stream skips the opening Also Hikaru is so oblivious. Hayase gives him the cdn4.everyjoe.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/runway-hints.gifI do like the story concept i.e. human species splitting into two and evolving in their own separate ways, but what killed Macross' potential arethe romance aspect and some really glaring derp animations. It's fine to have romance, but repetitively putting Hikaru with Hayase to have conversations and then get interrupted or have MC be oblivious is just eye gouging. When it clearly shows Minmay isn't interested through MULTIPLE scenes of her saying no boyfriend or interest in Hikaru, he refuses to acknowledge that and move on. In short, most romance scenes are pretty much useless and a timewaster. The animations look really bad in some scenes, but anything involving the fighters fighting while Minmay sings or a really big thing is about to be wrecked, then animation becomes great. Several things that caught my eye were improper facial reaction towards situation (characters were smiling while bad news was being mentioned and the voice acting to that didn't align with what the face was showing), frame skipping (i.e. there was one at the hospital) , inconsistencies (i.e. Hayase's two hands were on Hikaru but it showed the frame before that in which her hand is on his hand for the acceleration switch), etc. Very distracting actually since it was so noticeable. Bad idea to also continue the story after stopping the main fleet. There's quite a few episodes afterward and it seems to be nothing more than trying to make an even more bigger love triangle drama. They're basically stopping those giants with the same strategy too. I'm almost done with the first Macross and I can only hope the movie doesn't go this route.

I didn't mind the romance elements too much. After the first few episodes it seems obvious that Hikaru and Minmay would end up together, so when Hayase got involved I thought it was an interesting twist.
I still gotta watch the movie. Not really looing forward to Macross 7 but I am interested in Macross F. As I've mentioned earlier Macross Plus is great, even has Bryan Cranston doing the dub.

Love the jet mechs in Macross. Think I watched that opening almost every time too. That opening is visually amazing for its time (still is too) Unfortunately the song isn't.
I didn't really care for the My Boyfriend is a Pilot song and Minmay's other one.

I still gotta watch the movie. Not really looing forward to Macross 7 but I am interested in Macross F. As I've mentioned earlier Macross Plus is great, even has Bryan Cranston doing the dub. I watched the movie and it basically beats up the TV series and then some. And that's with a "rushed" adaptation. The animation is fantastic. Best animation I've seen in a mecha movie yet. Hell, even factoring in all the films today, considering all this shit was handdrawn, makes it even more impressive with the details and fluidity. Love the visual color palette and the choice of shadowing. The movie made you actually feel the vastness and the mechanics of space unlike the TV series which hardly did anything. From the Saturn ring to the moon's light shining through the ship's window. The sci-fi elements are there which was lacking in the TV series. If you get telephones that go to people trying to find the correct recipient of the call, technology has to be better. Roy's situation was handled better. Kakizaki's presence was like a quick joke. Kaifun's presence was minimal which was great since he didn't add much to the TV series other than being an annoying repetitive cunt. Minmay is more tolerable. Hikaru is more tolerable. Zentraedi vs Meltrandi was demonstrated more. The movie tied what the TV series did but made more sense of it, concentrated more on the relevant parts, get rid of the annoying/nonserious/story stalling/useless character interactions and put the franchise through an eloquent process while still being restricted to time limitations. I could go on, but I'll stop. The only negative was the rushed romance, but it still was handled way better than the TV series. It was not nonsensical, it felt realistic, it made sense, and the characters are written better such that you can feel more of the emotions that the characters feel. I'd watch the movie. Would not spoil anything since you watch the original Macross. Great movie. Although technically speaking, I probably wouldn't enjoy this movie so much if it wasn't for watching all of Macross and seeing the TV play out.

I enjoyed the opening song. Minmay's are nothing special, but they just have an 80s charm that I can get behind.

Not really looing forward to Macross 7 but I am interested in Macross F. As I've mentioned earlier Macross Plus is great, even has Bryan Cranston doing the dub. Macross Plus was alright overall. I like the movie edition better. Had couple of extra scenes in beginning and end and tied scenes better. I feel the story should have been centered more around Guld rather than Isamu, which the movie was. Didn't like the characters as much as the original Macross and the story isn't something to write home about. That fight scene between Guld and Isamu was amazing though. The buildings splitting apart as the jets go across them, the mechas transforming between modes to avoid line of heat seeking missiles. Goddamn. Beautiful. Another reason why I like Macross' mechas so much in comparison to the Gundams I've watched (unless there's a mecha in Gundam like in Macross that I've yet to watch). Not really looing forward to Macross 7 It sucks. I want to say the transition between Macross DRYL and Macross 7 is like Tetsuwan Birdy OVA and Decode, but that's overreacting probably in my part and I've only started It's awful right now though. Doesn't help that I don't like the music and the songs are much more obnoxious sounding.

Yeah, Macross 7 was awful. I still have the movie and the encore left. Other than maybe a few scenes of at least decent animation and Mylene's songs, there's nothing else positive for this show.
Basara is annoying and his singing is irritating for much of the beginning. In the later parts, it isn't as bad, but goddamn, since it's the majority of the show, it really puts an insult to the rest of the previous Macross entries.
Plot is also dumb as shit.

Do you know if Gundam has any missile weaving? It's such a great fan service technique for me. For some reason, I can only remember Macross missile weaving thanks to them having jet mechas

Although a post 2000 series, Macross Zero and Frontier (only through 1st episode so we'll wait and see) were well animated, I might need to watch Mobile Suit Gundam 00 if I manage to enjoy the Gundam franchise later in the future.

Got only Macross Delta and II left. So far it's DRYL >> Frontier Movie 2 > Zero > Plus Movie Edition > Frontier > Plus > Frontier Movie 1 > SDF >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Macross 7
As a franchise, I can't think of any one that does aerial fights better.

Gundam got kinda weird when they started getting into "newtypes". Mostly in a good way, made for some interesting visual sequences at the very least. Ending didn't feel like much of a conclusion, though knowing how long this series goes on I suppose that's not all that surprising.
